Seagate opens eBay store to sell refurbished hard drives: 22TB drives for $311

Seagate has launched an eBay store to sell refurbished hard drives as part of its sustainability efforts and to reduce e-waste. The company receives used hard drives through its Circularity Program, refurbishes them to industry standards, and offers up to two years of warranty. This move aims to provide reliable refurbished drives directly from the manufacturer, ensuring quality and trust for buyers. The storefront has received positive feedback, with customers praising the like-new condition of the drives and fast delivery. Prices for refurbished drives are significantly lower than new ones, with a 22TB drive priced at $311 compared to $610.99 for a new unit. Seagate's initiative may lead other storage manufacturers to explore similar ventures. The eBay store is currently exclusive to the U.S. market, but expansion to other countries may be considered in the future. Overall, Seagate's refurbished hard drive store offers a cost-effective and sustainable solution for consumers looking for reliable storage options.

That's pretty pricey at $14.18/TB for a used drive.

You can pick up refurb'd 16TB drives at $9.38/TB[1]. I have nothing against used drives, in fact, I run 12 of them at home for 2 separate NAS things.

"This becomes important as the rare earth materials used in mechanical hard drives cannot be re-used, making hard drive shredding a non-sustainable practice."

Why?
