KDE Plasma 6.1 Performing Much Better on Older Intel Integrated Graphics

The recently released KDE Plasma 6.1 desktop environment brings significant improvements for users with older Intel integrated graphics, particularly enhancing the performance on aging laptops. The key enhancement lies in the dynamic triple buffering support implemented in the KWin compositor. This improvement results in smoother graphics performance, especially noticeable on older Intel laptops with high-resolution screens, where users have reported a substantial increase in frame rates from stuttery 30-40fps to a solid 60fps. The triple buffering feature is designed to activate only when necessary, predicting rendering times to minimize latency without being GPU-dependent. This enhancement not only benefits older or slower processors but also shows performance gains on systems with multiple GPUs, such as laptops with integrated Intel and dedicated Nvidia graphics. Overall, the improved KDE Plasma 6.1 desktop experience on old graphics hardware offers a significant boost in performance and smoother operation, making it feel like using a new laptop for some users.

I for one am Very happy to see this! For many years on KDE 5 on Intel Graphics, I was plagued with random compositor crashes, which seemed to be a common bug report. I hope this will resolve these issues going forward!
