Read original articleIran has acquired two Airbus A340 planes that were supposed to fly from Lithuania to Sri Lanka and the Philippines. The planes, leased by a Gambian company, had their transponders turned off upon entering Iranian airspace, landing in Tehran and Chabahar. This incident is not the first of its kind, as Iran previously diverted four Airbus A340 planes from Johannesburg to Uzbekistan in a similar manner. The planes are now in the possession of Mahan Air, allegedly evading American sanctions related to Iran's nuclear program. Economic sanctions have hindered Iran from purchasing new aircraft, leading to such actions. The cost of an Airbus A340 is reported to be over $150 million. The Lithuanian authorities prevented a third plane from taking off, suspecting it might also end up in Iran. Iran's need for aircraft has been highlighted, with reports indicating a requirement for at least 550 planes.
