NFL is liable for $4,707,259,944 in 'Sunday Ticket' case

A federal jury has ordered the NFL to pay $4,707,259,944.64 for violating antitrust laws in distributing out-of-market Sunday afternoon games through the "Sunday Ticket" premium subscription service. The lawsuit, covering 2.4 million residential subscribers and 48,000 businesses in the U.S. from 2011 to 2022, claimed the NFL inflated prices and restricted competition by offering "Sunday Ticket" exclusively on a satellite provider. The jury found the NFL liable for $4,610,331,671.74 in damages to residential subscribers and $96,928,272.90 to commercial subscribers. Due to federal antitrust laws, the NFL could potentially owe $14,121,779,833.92, with each of the 32 teams possibly owing $441.3 million. Post-trial motions, including the NFL's appeal, are scheduled for July 31, with potential changes to the "Sunday Ticket" package pending the outcome of appeals. The NFL has expressed intent to appeal the verdict, which could involve the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals and potentially the Supreme Court.

Im confused about this. Does that mean a tv show, or podcast being exclusive to a specific streaming service could be next?

Also, the talk of the price being too high, If people are paying for it then the price isn’t too high right? this is clearly a service for “super fans”. I don’t think it’s unreasonable for it to be a premium purchase.

Though, I am kind of hoping this will end up with UFC events being cheaper, and not requiring espn+

Could not happen to a better sport org. I am old enough to remember when the NFL was fun to watch. Playing in heavy snow or mud pits added a great deal of unpredictably.

Now it seems each game is choreographed like a Broadway Play. I stopped watching completely decades ago.

For the young people here, want to see some fun games, watch some old recordings from the 60s.

There's zero chance that the award amount will stand, but I hope it does and bankrupts the league.

Make that $14 billion.

> Since damages can be tripled under federal antitrust laws, the NFL could end up being liable for $14,121,779,833.92

I had to do a triple take and count the commas. That's 4 billion dollars.
