Ola replaces Google Maps with in-house 'Ola Maps', announces API for developers

Ola has announced the replacement of Google Maps with its in-house mapping solution called Ola Maps. This move is expected to save the company up to Rs 100 crore annually. Ola co-founder and CEO Bhavish Aggarwal shared the news on social media, highlighting the cost-saving benefits of this transition. The decision to switch to Ola Maps follows the company's earlier move from Microsoft Azure to an in-house cloud infrastructure. Ola Maps will offer additional features such as street view, neural radiance fields, indoor images, 3D maps, and drone maps in the future. The mapping solution is built on top of OpenStreetMap and proprietary data from Ola. Ola Maps API will be available for developers on both Android and iOS platforms through Krutrim Cloud, allowing them to integrate the mapping service into their applications for a fee. While Google Maps is free for consumers, businesses like Ola incorporating its API have to pay a fee, which Ola aims to eliminate with its in-house solution.

wow. a mostly empty press release that mentioned an xitter post. how lazy are PR teams nowadays?!

they spent several paragraphs to say "we now have a rebranded openstreetmap solution".

i bet "olamaps" is not even something that exist. just a 15 line middleware api handling local cache to OSM.

"Ola maps has attributed OpenStreetMap on its app, indicating the Ola Maps solution has been built on top of it, along with proprietary data from Ola"

Grab did something similar in their Southeast Asia markets a couple of years ago, if I correctly remember the timeline.
