Google's Nonconsensual Explicit Images Problem Is Getting Worse

Google is facing a worsening issue with nonconsensual explicit images being circulated online, with reports of intimate content posted without consent on the rise. Despite efforts from victims and advocates to propose solutions to Google, such as banning specific websites and using unique identifiers to block content, the search giant has not implemented these suggestions. The company has made some changes to help survivors remove unwanted search results more easily, but advocates believe more proactive measures are needed to protect victims' privacy. The problem is exacerbated by the proliferation of AI tools creating explicit deepfakes, leading to a surge in cases reported to hotlines. While Google has taken steps to combat nonconsensual explicit imagery, critics argue that more can be done, pointing to the company's stricter measures against child sexual abuse material as evidence of its capability to address the issue. Despite internal discussions and proposals for more robust actions, Google has yet to fully address the growing problem of nonconsensual explicit images circulating online.

Whatever the solution, it's not to leave final arbitration of Google's search results up to a censorious Internet gatekeeper's tools and lists. We've been over this already with the Internet Watch Foundation.
