Internet Archive and Library and Archives Canada Launches Digitization Project

Internet Archive Canada has initiated a digitization project in partnership with Library and Archives Canada (LAC) to enhance access to historical publications. The project involves setting up six digitization workstations at LAC's Collections Storage facility in Gatineau, aiming to digitize around 100,000 out-of-copyright publications from the 1200s to 1920. These materials will be freely accessible online, benefiting researchers, historians, scholars, and the general public. The collaboration between Internet Archive Canada and LAC highlights the significance of preserving Canada's documentary heritage and expanding access to information. By working together, both organizations are contributing to the cultural, social, and economic development of the nation. This joint effort aligns with LAC's mission to serve as the government's memory and Internet Archive Canada's goal of making knowledge universally accessible. The project signifies a step towards ensuring that historical knowledge is preserved and shared for current and future generations.

Sounds great, hopefully Library & Archives Canada will be more reliable stewards than the Canadian Media Fund who inexplicably decided to abandon and delete their 5 year "pilot" effort to preserve memorable Canadian film and TV content.

>The Canada Media Fund previously operated a YouTube channel called Encore+ in collaboration with Telefilm Canada, Deluxe Toronto, BroadbandTV, Bell Media, and Google Canada. This channel was uniquely dedicated to licensing and making freely available older Canadian content, particularly series and films without an existing streaming service presence or physical home media releases. On November 17 and 18, 2022, official platforms announced that after more than five years of availability, the service (now considered a pilot project) was to shut down on November 30. All media was wiped from both YouTube channels on that date, and the Twitter account and Facebook page with lists of content and discussion were made unavailable.

This is the first time I have heard about Internet Archive Canada and the website internetarchivecanada.org is just a plain Wordpress blog without any obvious information about who they are. Do they have anything to do with the Internet Archive (archive.org)? Will the digitized material end up there or be locked in Canadian libraries?

I hope they decentralise for their own protection and open a few more.
