Read original articleKaspersky Lab is closing its U.S. division and laying off workers following a ban by the U.S. Commerce Department on the sale of Kaspersky software in the country. The ban, citing national security concerns, led to the decision to wind down U.S. operations. The company, which had been selling software in the U.S. since 2005, stated that the ban made business opportunities in the country unviable. The ban also prevents Kaspersky from providing updates for its software in the U.S., impacting its effectiveness over time. Despite denying allegations of spying, the ban effectively ends Kaspersky's commercial business in the U.S. The company's global earnings were $721 million last year, with U.S. sales accounting for nearly 10% of its revenue. Users of Kaspersky products in the U.S. are not in violation of the law but are encouraged to switch to alternative solutions for data protection. The Commerce Department also added three Kaspersky entities to its trade-restrictions list, prohibiting U.S.-based suppliers from doing business with the company.
