Euro 2024 Busted Legend of German Efficiency

The efficiency myth of German transportation was shattered during Euro 2024 as football fans faced train service issues. Despite discounted travel deals, supporters experienced delays, overcrowded trains, and poor communication. The Deutsche Bahn (DB) operator's punctuality rate of 64% in 2023 fell short compared to Great Britain's 67.8%. Germany's underinvestment in railway infrastructure, ranking 10th in spending per person, reflects broader economic challenges. The country's struggle to modernize is attributed to a lack of investment, digitalization delays, and bureaucratic hurdles. Infrastructure repairs are patchy, causing ongoing problems. To address these issues, a significant investment program is deemed necessary, especially for bridge renovations and broader infrastructure improvements. Germany's economic growth forecasts remain low, highlighting the need for substantial reforms to boost efficiency and competitiveness. Despite its international reputation for efficiency, Germany faces internal challenges that require substantial investment and modernization efforts to address transportation and infrastructure shortcomings.

Last couple times I went to Germany, the trains were unreliable and often more than 30 minutes late. It was never like this 10 years ago.
