Proton Mail goes AI, security-focused userbase goes 'what on Earth'

Proton Mail, known for its privacy-focused email service, recently introduced Proton Scribe, an AI writing assistant for enterprise customers. Despite claiming user demand for AI features, the move has sparked concerns among the security-conscious user base. The implementation of Scribe, utilizing a Mistral LLM, has raised red flags as it deviates from Proton's usual transparency regarding security and threat models. While Proton assures that only prompts are sent to servers and promptly deleted, users have reported the feature being enabled by default. The vague descriptions of Scribe's threat model have left privacy-focused users questioning the service's commitment to privacy. This shift in approach has drawn parallels to Signal Messenger's controversial move with MobileCoin, leading to doubts about Proton Mail's security standards. The privacy-conscious community is closely monitoring these developments, emphasizing the importance of maintaining trust in recommending secure communication platforms.

Whenever I see a survey that does not give me options from a clear no to a clear yes, I already know that the survey only exists to push an agenda. Every option you give can somehow be used by the company to impose anything they want onto the results.

Fuck Proton for turning out exactly like all the other shitty companies.

This opinion is based on the statement of the article, that the survey didn't give the option of hell, no!

Just proves minor players in any space take in picky users from the major players.

The two buttons that should see most use (condense, ultra spellcheck) offer reduction of content but people who refuse to associate with gen AI kneejerk away from any of it regardless.

I don't think any boycott will achieve the AI rupture they want. People who don't get the best reasonable basic AI help will move to where they get the best AI and whatever their precious email medium means to them will be "destroyed" faster.

The article is on point.

I've been a paying customer for years, but this makes me worried.

I hope they come to their senses and this is just a one-off
