Solzhenitsyn Warned Us

In a thought-provoking article by Gary Saul Morson, the warnings of Russian writer Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn about the decline of Western civilization are revisited. Solzhenitsyn, known for his insights into totalitarianism, criticized the West for its shallow understanding of life and pursuit of individual happiness above all else. He foresaw a collapse of Western civilization due to its spiritual decay and embrace of false values. Solzhenitsyn's speeches highlighted the dangers of hedonism, lack of moral growth, and decline in courage within Western societies. He cautioned against the rise of ideologies like democratic socialism and the resurgence of Marxist doctrines, predicting societal division and hatred. Solzhenitsyn emphasized the importance of self-restraint, moral growth, and spiritual fulfillment to avoid societal decay. His warnings about the erosion of values, the loss of courage, and the rise of hatred within societies resonate strongly in today's world, reflecting a prescient understanding of the potential pitfalls facing Western civilization.

This is why for decades the official Soviet Union policy on disrupting the United States internally was to leave the country alone and let its citizens destroy it from its inside. No need for outside agitators, the United States citizens will destroy the country itself.

I dropped reading this about halfway: the author has some fairly cranky opinions about recent history.

I read the article a couple of times. The observation that decay leads to a loss courage rang loud and true. Think all those GOP politicians originally vorciferally against trump now for Trump. We see this is the small in corporate america: managers and hr are more interested in sweeping problems under the rug than deal closer to root cause. You can force the issue but one is seen as an antagonist not a leader. Now, the focus on spiritual values ... maybe the US has the best porn, playboy etc out there but I got to say my friends and family def don't see hedonism or materialism as a good or merely the best we can make of this life because except for that it sucks. Surely the answer cannot be organized religion or state imposed religion. Solzhenitsyn's answer is literature combining soul, empathy evidently. Finally, taking care of me and my own is not unflinchingly selfish. Let's not forget that.
