Bangladesh's internet blackout immobilizes its booming tech industry

The tech industry in Bangladesh is facing a standstill due to a nationwide internet blackout that has lasted for three days. The blackout was initiated following violent clashes between police and student groups protesting a new government job policy. This disruption has led to significant financial and reputational losses for the industry, affecting over 4,500 tech companies and more than 750,000 professionals. The blackout has also impacted freelance tech workers, like Zulfigar Ali Bhuiyah, who expressed feeling helpless without internet access. While the government blames arsonists for the blackout, internet service providers claim it was a government decision beyond their control. The blackout has raised concerns about the free flow of information and communication platforms, with digital rights watchdogs urging a rights-respecting approach. The government aims to restore internet services while ensuring people's physical and digital security. Bangladesh's tech sector, which generates $1.4 billion annually in export income, faces uncertainty as the blackout continues to disrupt operations.

It happens quite a bit in few Indian states too. Governments are too trigger-happy to shut down Internet in times of large-scale competitive examinations or protests against their policies etc
