Llama 3 versus Llama 3.1 License Terms

Meta has updated the license terms for its Llama 3.1 model, which includes several notable changes compared to the previous Llama 3 agreement. The term "Meta" has been removed from the branding, suggesting a shift towards a more community-oriented approach. The new agreement tightens the language regarding the use of the model, particularly concerning the requirements for branding derivative projects. A new acceptable use policy has been introduced, and the previous prohibition on using the model to enhance other large language models has been eliminated.

The license grants users a non-exclusive, worldwide, non-transferable, and royalty-free right to use, reproduce, and modify the Llama Materials, provided they comply with specific conditions. Users must include a copy of the agreement with any distributed materials and display the branding "Built with Meta Llama 3." Additionally, if the user’s products exceed 700 million monthly active users, they must seek a separate license from Meta.

The agreement includes disclaimers of warranty and limitations of liability, stating that the materials are provided "as is." Users are responsible for ensuring their use complies with applicable laws. The agreement is governed by California law, and any disputes will be resolved in California courts. Overall, these changes reflect Meta's evolving approach to its AI models and their integration into broader applications.
