Office Space (2006)

Aaron Swartz reflects on his struggles with productivity after moving to an office environment in San Francisco. He notes a stark contrast between his previous work habits and his current situation, where he feels overwhelmed and unproductive. Despite having previously completed numerous tasks, he now finds himself unable to finish books, respond to emails, or write code. The office atmosphere, characterized by noise and distractions, contributes to his frustration. Swartz describes the office layout, which includes shared spaces with constant interruptions from colleagues seeking help with technical issues, further hindering his ability to focus on his own work.

He expresses dissatisfaction with the company's IT policies, which include restrictive access to company laptops and a lack of administrative control. The environment leaves him feeling drained, and he compensates by engaging in social activities after work, often leading to late nights. Swartz's narrative highlights the challenges of adapting to a corporate setting that stifles creativity and productivity, contrasting it with the freedom and satisfaction he experienced in a more independent work style. He concludes with a sense of entrapment in a cycle of unfulfilling workdays and vibrant but exhausting evenings, suggesting a need for change in his work environment to regain his productivity and well-being.

I started and left my first in-person job in 6 years recently.

When I got home, I felt so drained that I didn’t even want to write any code or play any games. (which usually means I’m depressed)

Now it could’ve been that my boss sucked or that I just wasn’t used to leaving my house for that long every day, but if I can help it I’ll never take an office job again.
