AWS freezes CodeCommit, Cloud9, SimpleDB and more

AWS has recently ceased onboarding new customers for several services, including CodeCommit, Cloud9, and SimpleDB, without prior notice or formal announcements. Users discovered the changes when attempting to create new repositories, receiving error messages indicating that new access was no longer permitted. AWS staff confirmed that as of June 6, 2024, CodeCommit would not accept new customers and would only receive security and availability updates moving forward. AWS VP Jeff Barr acknowledged the discontinuation of new access to these services, which also include S3 Select, CloudSearch, Forecast, and Data Pipeline, while assuring that existing features would remain unchanged.

The lack of communication regarding these changes has led to customer frustration, with many expressing disappointment over the absence of transparency and clarity about the future of these services. Some users noted that existing AWS templates for Control Tower are now broken due to the changes. CodeCommit, once a key component of AWS's DevOps offerings, has seen limited adoption compared to competitors like GitHub and GitLab, which provide more extensive features.

Additionally, AWS has suggested migration paths for users of Cloud9 to other IDEs, emphasizing the need for developers to streamline their workflows with familiar tools. Concerns have also been raised about the future of AWS Amplify, which relies on CodeCommit. Overall, AWS appears to be shifting its focus towards integration with popular third-party services rather than maintaining a comprehensive DevOps solution.

I'm a CodeCommit customer. I'm ok with deprecation, but I don't understand why they didn't give us users a year to migrate like with QLDB.

We put everything on CodeCommit here! While there's no rush to migrate, I guess we should do it soon.

I don't think the issue was lack of use, or difficulty to support. It probably just lost money.

RIP S3 Select, you granted me wizard status in the eyes of many bumbling engineering teams.

There was no advanced notice and people only found out about it after trying to create new repositories or environments (Cloud9) in a new organization.

Even on Twitter, Jeff Bar was cryptic

On the other hand, they just added support to view images inline in the console for markdown files in CodeCommit last year.

This must have been a sudden decision. Last year when I was still working at AWS, there was talk about fully integrating VSCode third party plug in support.

From previous threads, it seems like it's been a running joke inside of AWS that SimpleDB hadn't already been 86'd.

will miss daily 10-15 minutes of throttling rate exceeded errors in codecommit…
