AWS freezes CodeCommit, Cloud9, SimpleDB and more
AWS has stopped onboarding new customers for several services, including CodeCommit and Cloud9, effective June 6, 2024, leading to customer frustration and concerns about future integrations and service continuity.
Read original articleAWS has recently ceased onboarding new customers for several services, including CodeCommit, Cloud9, and SimpleDB, without prior notice or formal announcements. Users discovered the changes when attempting to create new repositories, receiving error messages indicating that new access was no longer permitted. AWS staff confirmed that as of June 6, 2024, CodeCommit would not accept new customers and would only receive security and availability updates moving forward. AWS VP Jeff Barr acknowledged the discontinuation of new access to these services, which also include S3 Select, CloudSearch, Forecast, and Data Pipeline, while assuring that existing features would remain unchanged.
The lack of communication regarding these changes has led to customer frustration, with many expressing disappointment over the absence of transparency and clarity about the future of these services. Some users noted that existing AWS templates for Control Tower are now broken due to the changes. CodeCommit, once a key component of AWS's DevOps offerings, has seen limited adoption compared to competitors like GitHub and GitLab, which provide more extensive features.
Additionally, AWS has suggested migration paths for users of Cloud9 to other IDEs, emphasizing the need for developers to streamline their workflows with familiar tools. Concerns have also been raised about the future of AWS Amplify, which relies on CodeCommit. Overall, AWS appears to be shifting its focus towards integration with popular third-party services rather than maintaining a comprehensive DevOps solution.
