China's Energy Revolution: Wind and Solar Surpass Coal in Historic Milestone

China has reached a significant milestone in its energy sector, with wind and solar energy surpassing coal in capacity for the first time as of June 2024. According to the National Energy Administration, solar power is expected to become the primary energy source in China by 2026, with a cumulative capacity projected to exceed 1.38 terawatts, outpacing coal by 150 gigawatts. This transition reflects China's commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable development.

The country has made substantial investments in renewable energy, with annual installations of wind and solar consistently exceeding 100 gigawatts since 2020, compared to a decline in coal power additions, which fell from 40 gigawatts last year to an estimated 8 gigawatts in the first half of 2024. The Chinese government has implemented stricter regulations on new coal projects to meet carbon reduction goals, focusing on phasing out smaller coal plants and upgrading existing ones to lower emissions.

Wind power, introduced in the early 2000s, has seen significant growth, particularly in recent years, with 75 gigawatts added last year alone. Solar photovoltaic capacity has also surged, with 216 gigawatts added in 2023 and an expected total of over 230 gigawatts for 2024. However, challenges remain, including low utilization rates and the need for improved grid infrastructure and battery storage to ensure reliability as clean energy sources expand.
