Halide's 'Anti-Intelligent' Update Makes iPhone Photos Natural

Halide, a popular iPhone camera app, has released a significant update introducing a new image processing pipeline called Process Zero. This update eliminates all standard iPhone image processing, relying instead on a single RAW image file without artificial intelligence or computational photography. The developer, Lux Optics, aims to provide photographers with a more natural look reminiscent of older digital cameras, featuring characteristics like natural sensor grain and slight color aberrations. Process Zero captures images at speeds 10 to 25 times faster than ProRAW, producing a 12-megapixel image along with a RAW DNG file for flexible editing. While this new processing method offers a unique aesthetic, it may result in noisier images in low light and less dynamic range compared to standard processing. Users can still choose between various processing options, including ProRAW and reduced processing. Additionally, the update includes Image Lab, a basic tool for adjusting exposure on Process Zero images. Halide version 2.15 is available now, with a promotional membership price of $11.99 for the first week, increasing to $19.99 thereafter. A lifetime license is also offered for $59.99, which includes future updates like Halide Mark III.

- Halide's new Process Zero offers a natural, unprocessed photo aesthetic.

- The update allows users to choose between multiple image processing options.

- Process Zero captures images significantly faster than ProRAW.

- Image Lab provides basic exposure adjustments for Process Zero images.

- Halide version 2.15 is available with promotional pricing for new memberships.

The official blog is the best source for this IMO. It's well written as always. https://www.lux.camera/introducing-process-zero-for-iphone/

As someone who has been annoyed by the processing since iPhone 13 [1], I finally feel vindicated. The results are much sharper and the lighting is much more natural. There are some scenes, especially foliage [2], where the processed version looks like an AI generated cartoon.

Halide is excellent but it’s absurd that this capability isn’t available on an iPhone without a third-party app.
