Cockroachlabs – Evolving our self-hosted offering and license model

CockroachDB is evolving its self-hosted offering and licensing model to better serve its users. Over the past decade, the platform has established itself as a reliable database solution for mission-critical workloads, capable of maintaining business continuity during various outages. Historically, CockroachDB offered a free Core version and a paid Enterprise version, but usage trends indicated that many startups desired Enterprise features, while larger businesses often opted for the free Core version. To address these trends, CockroachDB is consolidating its offerings into a single Enterprise version, which will provide all users access to the full capabilities of the database. This new licensing model will allow individuals, students, and small businesses to use the Enterprise version for free, while larger businesses will be encouraged to engage in a fair exchange of value. The new structure will be implemented with the release of version 24.3 in November, retiring the Core offering. Additionally, a 30-day trial and a free license tier will be introduced, ensuring that all users can benefit from the robust features previously reserved for paying customers. CockroachDB remains committed to keeping its code source available to foster innovation within the ecosystem.

There’s one problem with this model. Let’s say I’m running a pre-revenue startup and I want to use the self-hosted version of CockroachDB. The license allows me to do it for free until I get to $10M annual revenue. Well, that’s great and all but I’d like to know how much I’ll pay once I do reach those numbers. However, the pricing for self-hosted offering is a secret, it’s “pricing upon request” – I have no way to estimate these expenses and thus no way to estimate if CockroachDB is a reasonable choice for my startup in the long term.

TL;DR

> With the introduction of version 24.3 in November, we are retiring our Core offering and introducing a new Enterprise licensing structure for self-hosted users, also applied to new patch releases of versions 23.1 and later. This new structure will provide all users with the robust database capabilities found previously only in the self-hosted Enterprise license. CockroachDB will remain entirely source code available. Note that there will be no change for customers of our cloud platform.
