Bugs, mold, mildew found in Boar's Head plant linked to deadly listeria outbreak

A recent investigation by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) revealed significant health violations at a Boar's Head plant in Jarratt, Virginia, linked to a listeria outbreak that has resulted in 57 hospitalizations and at least nine deaths across 18 states. The USDA's findings included the presence of mold, mildew, and insects throughout the facility. Following the outbreak, Boar's Head recalled all deli meats produced at the plant. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) noted this outbreak is the largest since the 2011 listeriosis outbreak associated with cantaloupe. Contaminated products were traced back to the plant, with genetic sequencing confirming the link to the outbreak strain. The USDA documented 69 instances of noncompliance at the plant over the past year, but no enforcement actions have been taken against Boar's Head. The company has suspended operations at the facility and is working to address the issues, including cleaning and retraining staff. Boar's Head expressed regret over the situation and emphasized its commitment to food safety. Consumers are advised to check for recalled products and clean any surfaces that may have come into contact with them.

Only "deli" meats I will eat are PDO Prosciutto di Parma imported from Italy and less frequently PDO acorn-fed Jamón ibérico imported from Spain.

Pretty much everything else sold at US supermarkets is filled with nitrites, even when packaging insists that's not the case it's usually celery powder sleight of hand, and generally horrible for one's health.

This doesn't look good for Boar's Head. A kind of similar case happened here in Spain in 2019, also in a meat processing plant. 4 people died in that case.

> "Small flying gnat like insects were observed crawling on the walls and flying around the room. The rooms walls had heavy meat buildup," they wrote.

That sounds like a horror movie.
