Microsoft says its Recall uninstall option in Windows 11 is just a bug

Microsoft has clarified that the appearance of the Recall uninstall option in Windows 11 is a bug, not an intended feature. The Recall feature, which captures screenshots of user activity, was mistakenly listed as an optional feature in the latest Windows 11 update (version 24H2). Brandon LeBlanc, a senior product manager at Microsoft, confirmed that the issue will be addressed in a forthcoming update. Recall was initially set to launch with Copilot Plus PCs in June but faced delays due to security concerns regarding its unencrypted database, which could have been vulnerable to malware. Microsoft plans to preview Recall for Windows Insiders in October, with enhancements including encryption and an opt-in model. There is speculation that Microsoft may need to provide an uninstall option for Recall in compliance with the European Commission's Digital Markets Act, similar to previous adjustments made for the Edge browser in the European Economic Area.

- Microsoft states the Recall uninstall option in Windows 11 is a bug.

- Recall feature captures user activity screenshots and faced security concerns.

- The feature's launch was delayed, with a preview expected for Windows Insiders in October.

- Microsoft is making Recall an opt-in feature and enhancing security measures.

- Potential compliance with EU regulations may require an uninstall option for Recall.

Recall is a misfeature. I don't need or want it.

The subtitle is even better,

> Microsoft is working to fix Recall showing up as an optional Windows 11 feature.

then

> While the latest update to Windows 11 makes it look like the upcoming Recall feature can be easily removed by users, Microsoft tells us it’s just a bug and a fix is coming.

with the crown

> Microsoft is now making the AI-powered feature an opt-in experience instead of on by default.

I thought that had been changed already. As before, they want to make it Optional Until They Change Their Minds.

tl;dr Uninstall Windows 11.

Windows 11 otherwise has the makings of a really nice OS. A real shame, because the only thing holding it back is Microsoft's absolute contempt for its customers.

It's not just Recall; it's the mandatory product telemetry, forced cloud integration, and everything else they've gone to special lengths to prevent users disabling or opting out of.

enough of AI phobia, if I actually do need a feature like Recall on MacOS/linux and local AI model, what are the options?

Recall's premise is great. But not something that should be coming from any third party.

I routinely run a screen recorder during dev to help with the process. Often testing a change results in a fleeting error message, or screen artefact that you notice in passing if you're lucky. But usually there are multiple things going on and you have no time to investigate.

Reviewing the screencast let's you at least see exactly what happened and substantially cuts down the time you need to get back on track.

Sometimes you make a couple of simple changes in the code and break something. Reviewing the screencast helps focus on those changes. Yes, you should be making mini commits, but come on...
