Stuff I would tell my younger self

The author shares insights and advice that he would give to his younger self, drawn from personal experiences and observations. He emphasizes the importance of avoiding the "happiness trap," suggesting that calm should be the default emotional state rather than the pursuit of happiness. Authenticity is highlighted as more valuable than niceness, advocating for honesty in communication while maintaining kindness. The author stresses that individuals are not responsible for others' happiness and should focus on self-care and setting boundaries. He warns against feeding negative emotions and encourages embracing change, uncertainty, and the need for action. The importance of making decisions based on excitement rather than obligation is discussed, as well as the value of time over money. The author concludes with the idea of playing "infinite games," where the goal is to continue learning and growing rather than simply winning.

- Aim for calm instead of chasing happiness.

- Value authenticity and honesty in communication.

- Focus on self-care and set boundaries for others.

- Make decisions based on excitement, not obligation.

- Prioritize time as the most valuable asset.

Nothing wrong with that list.

It’s a fine list.

But to me the items on it feel like life-lessons you have to learn along the way.

For me, I know what I would tell my younger self.

I was born into poverty and no one told me or ever taught me how the world really worked. It was assumed you’d grow up and get a job and things would work out in the end.

So here’s what I would tell myself:

Invest early and often.

Put extra into your pension, buy and hold ETFs.

Do that from the moment you are old enough and earning money.

That’s it.

Money isn’t everything, but money gives you options. Money can help others. You need money. Getting rich suddenly is unlikely to happen.
