Taildrop lets you send files between your personal devices on Tailscale network

Taildrop is a new feature from Tailscale currently in public alpha, allowing users to send files between personal devices on a Tailscale network (tailnet) through encrypted peer-to-peer connections. This feature is designed for secure file transfers without relying on third-party servers, making it suitable for sensitive or large files. To use Taildrop, users must opt-in via the admin console and enable the Send Files feature. The service supports various operating systems, including macOS, iOS, Windows, Android, and Linux, and does not require additional client setup for most devices. However, it is limited to transferring files between devices owned by the same user and cannot send files to tagged nodes. Taildrop also includes a feature to resume interrupted transfers, enhancing usability for large files. Users can share files easily through a right-click menu, and received files are stored in designated directories based on the operating system. Taildrop aims to provide a seamless and secure way to transfer files across devices, addressing the limitations of existing solutions like cloud storage and Airdrop.

- Taildrop allows secure file transfers between personal devices on a Tailscale network.

- The feature is currently in public alpha and requires users to opt-in.

- It supports multiple operating systems and does not require extensive setup.

- Transfers are encrypted and can resume if interrupted.

- Users can only send files between their own devices, not to others on the network.

I don't want to sound negative, but I genuinely don't get the premise of Tailscale.

VPN as a service sounds wrong from security perspective, as you are giving away all the keys. The same goes to the VPN providers for Internet access, but that at least is not trusted as much as Tailscale is.

These internal services that are annohnced are just... Services you can run on the Internet with TLS.

The fact that this is a product is a failure for the internet at large (meaning the whole system SW, HW, OS, networks, not to be interpreted literally as only the notwork infrastructure).

I’ve had a lot of success with Taildrive (still alpha) to share directories between devices in sync. e.g my keepassxc database lives on my homeserver, all devices access it through taildrive, this is impossible with iCloud drive because there is no linux integration.

Too bad it doesn't work between different tailnets (users). Would love this.

I love and hate this feature, as it gives no progress or finished indicators.

Personally I would use something like a Reticulum Network for this kind of thing with a simple Python script to establish a Link between the two devices and send a Resource.
