75% of founders in the latest Y Combinator cohort are working on AI startups

The latest Y Combinator cohort has seen a significant shift towards artificial intelligence (AI), with 75% of the 208 startups focusing on AI-related products. This marks the highest concentration of AI startups in the program's history, reflecting a broader trend where nearly half of all US venture capital investments last quarter were directed towards AI companies. The surge in AI startups raises questions about whether Y Combinator is intentionally selecting for this focus, if more founders are gravitating towards AI, or if startups are simply branding themselves as AI-related to attract investment. Notable AI projects in this cohort include an AI-powered interior designer, a generative AI interviewer, and a voice AI for drive-thru orders. In contrast, the previous tech hype cycle centered around "Crypto/Web 3," which saw only a handful of startups in recent batches. Additionally, the tech job market is evolving, with non-tech industries increasingly hiring tech talent, reflecting a slowdown in tech hiring growth and a shift towards more specialized roles within the tech sector.

unlike dot-com which brought in ecommerce, or smartphone which put info and entertainment in our pockets, genai is not doing anything to our daily lives.

productivity improvements in certain usecases are about it. it is not a giant leap which dot-com or smartphone enabled.

Gaming is probably one of the most high risk software fields there is, but AI products are up there too. Especially since many consumers still have their reservations against the technology.

Don't know if that means that their products incorporate AI, or that an AI is the product. Anyway, I wish them good luck.
