Russia May Be Fitting Starlink Dishes on Military Drones

Evidence has emerged suggesting that Russia may be equipping its military drones with Starlink satellite dishes to enhance their operational capabilities against Ukraine. A Ukrainian media outlet, Defense Express, reported the discovery of a downed Russian drone, specifically an Iranian Shahed-136, which was found alongside a destroyed Starlink dish. The dish bore the Starlink logo and included a serial number and QR code linked to SpaceX. This adaptation could allow the drones to maintain communication with Russian forces even in areas lacking cellular coverage, as Starlink utilizes satellites for internet connectivity. The Shahed-136 drone is capable of traveling up to 1,600 miles, raising concerns about Russia's ability to conduct long-range reconnaissance and strikes within Ukrainian territory. Despite efforts by SpaceX and the Pentagon to prevent the use of Starlink by Russian forces, reports indicate that Russian soldiers have been utilizing smuggled Starlink units in occupied regions of Ukraine. The Pentagon has acknowledged the ongoing challenge of countering Russia's exploitation of commercial communication systems like Starlink.
