Microsoft 365 alternative: openDesk version 1.0 announced for October

The German government is set to launch openDesk version 1.0, an open-source alternative to Microsoft 365, in mid-October. This initiative aims to reduce reliance on US software providers by offering a suite of applications for digital collaboration, including word processing, spreadsheets, chat, video conferencing, cloud storage, project management, and email functionalities. The official presentation will occur at the Smart Country Convention in Berlin from October 15 to 17. openDesk will feature both a community edition and an enterprise edition, which can be self-hosted or offered as Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). The development is coordinated by ZenDis, which has received significant funding from the federal government, totaling around 45 million euros since the project's inception in 2021. The initiative is part of a broader effort to establish a "Sovereign Workplace" for public sector entities in Germany. The openDesk suite will utilize components from various open-source projects and will be supported by IT service provider B1 Systems for self-hosting and StackIT for the SaaS version. This project also competes with the Phoenix suite from Dataport, which is not fully open-source and currently available only as SaaS.
