Firefox version 131.0 was released on October 1, 2024, introducing several new features and updates. Notably, the browser now offers temporary permissions for site access, which will expire after one hour or when the tab is closed. A new tab preview feature allows users to see a preview of background tabs by hovering over them. Additionally, Firefox will consider previously used languages when suggesting default translation languages. The ability to navigate to the search engine homepage from an empty search bar has been reintroduced. The update also includes various security fixes and support for the Swedish language in translations. For developers, the update removes deprecated SVG properties and introduces support for text fragments, enabling direct linking to specific text portions in web documents. Firefox has also added support for cookies with independent partitioned state (CHIPS). The release acknowledges contributions from 15 new volunteer developers. Users on Windows 8.1 and below, as well as macOS 10.14 and below, are advised to download the Extended Support Release (ESR) version of Firefox.
