Google's AI search summaries officially have ads

Google has officially integrated advertisements into its AI-generated search summaries, known as AI Overviews. This change allows users to see product suggestions alongside tips in response to queries with a commercial aspect. For instance, if a user searches for methods to remove a grass stain, the AI response will include relevant product recommendations under a "sponsored" label. Google has been testing this feature since May and is now rolling it out fully in the U.S. on mobile devices. The company believes this will help users connect with businesses and products at the moment they need assistance. Additionally, Google is enhancing the formatting of AI Overviews by making cited webpages more prominent, which has reportedly increased traffic to those sites. Another new feature being introduced is AI-organized search pages, which will provide a customized results page for specific searches, such as recipes, although this is also limited to mobile users in the U.S.
