They trained artificial neural networks using physics

The Nobel Prize in Physics 2024 has been awarded to John J. Hopfield from Princeton University and Geoffrey E. Hinton from the University of Toronto for their foundational contributions to machine learning through artificial neural networks. Their work, which began in the 1980s, utilizes principles from physics to develop methods that have become essential in modern machine learning. Hopfield is recognized for creating an associative memory network capable of storing and reconstructing images, while Hinton built upon this with the Boltzmann machine, which autonomously identifies features in data. This technology, inspired by the brain's structure, involves nodes representing neurons that interact through connections akin to synapses. The advancements made by these laureates have significantly impacted various fields, including physics, where artificial neural networks are employed to develop new materials. The prize amount of 11 million Swedish kronor will be shared equally between the two laureates.

Well, Geoff Hinton should get the prize for physiology instead. It's called “neural” networks after all.

This is embarrassing.

But denigrating an old institution for fashion is trendy these days — just look at their Olympics behavior.

In fairness, "using physics" is a pretty low bar. It was plain vanilla combinatorics and network theory.

What a strange announcement. Seems like a joke.
