Helping to build the open social web

Ben Werdmuller emphasizes the importance of developing the open social web, a decentralized network of interoperable social platforms like Mastodon and Threads. He highlights several benefits of this model, including the support for diverse communities, community-driven moderation, and improved developer experiences. Users gain more control over their data and interactions, free from corporate algorithms and surveillance. Werdmuller advocates for collaboration between news publishers and open social web vendors to enhance engagement and analytics, suggesting that publishers can achieve better results on these platforms compared to traditional social networks. He proposes various initiatives to support the open social web, such as providing anti-spam services, rebuilding the Known platform to be Fediverse-first, and creating an API engine to simplify development. Additionally, he envisions a professional open social network tailored for users seeking a high-quality experience within the Fediverse. Werdmuller seeks feedback on these ideas and their potential impact on the growth of the open social web.

- The open social web supports diverse communities and user control over data.

- Collaboration between publishers and open social platforms can enhance engagement.

- Proposed initiatives include anti-spam services and a professional open social network.

- Developers can benefit from simplified infrastructure for building Fediverse-compatible apps.

- Werdmuller invites feedback on his ideas for supporting the open social web.

You can't have a distributed social web with control over your data. If I make a post, it's out there. People can download it screenshot it whatever. I could delete my posts but it's too late. Also how could you ever guarantee that when you click the delete button on someone elses instance it actually deletes it?
