Annoyed Redditors tanking Google Search results shows perils of AI scrapers

A recent trend among Londoners on Reddit has emerged where users intentionally provide false restaurant recommendations to deter tourists and social media influencers from overcrowding their favorite dining spots. This behavior highlights the flaws in Google Search's reliance on user-generated content, particularly through its AI Overview feature, which summarizes search results based on web rankings. Critics argue that this feature can lead to inaccurate and misleading information, as it is susceptible to manipulation by users with ulterior motives. The trend reportedly began in response to influencers creating long lines at popular restaurants, prompting Reddit users to promote a chain restaurant, Angus Steakhouse, as a way to divert attention. This situation underscores the risks associated with AI scrapers and the potential for misinformation to be treated as factual data. Reddit's CEO acknowledged the platform's value as a source of human-generated content amidst a growing prevalence of AI-generated material, raising concerns about the quality of information used to train AI models. The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by platforms like Google and Reddit in maintaining the integrity of their content and search results.

Aberdeen Angus Steak House is a real group of central London restaurants. They are famous for expensive bad food. Supposedly making a fortune from jetlagged tourists. Reddit is praising them as a joke. This is confusing automated AI helpers. I'm suspicious the linked article was partly written by AI.

Does it show the perils though?

> at this point the Angus Steakhouse hype doesn’t appear to have made it into AI Overview. But it is appearing in Search results

It sounds like plain old SEO bombing to me - the AI mention is basically just clickbait.

This has actually affected me personally. My five years old recently asked me why we have not booked a table for our monthly visit to this wonderful restaurant known for its great steaks, lovely atmosphere and beloved by Londonerns of all ages and I had to explain to her that we should not mention this online in case any influences were listening in search for their next once in the lifetime culinary experience.
