A TikTok alternative called Loops is coming for the Fediverse

Loops, a new decentralized short-form video app, has recently opened signups as an alternative to TikTok within the fediverse. Developed by Daniel Supernault, who also created the Instagram alternative Pixelfed, Loops allows users to post videos of up to 60 seconds. Features such as sound usage, video remixing, pinned profile videos, and curated comment sections are planned for future updates, although hashtags and mentions are not yet available. The app will initially be accessible on iOS through TestFlight and will also offer a side-loadable version for Android. Moderation will be conducted by human moderators, with a trust score system determining the visibility of user-uploaded videos. Content ownership remains with users, and Loops will not sell or share videos with third-party advertisers or use them for AI training. Instead, the platform will be funded through grants, sponsorships, and donations. While Loops is not yet fully integrated with the fediverse or open-sourced, it aims to provide a user-centric experience focused on privacy and content ownership.

No one would use it. The type of people who would use Tiktok would not care at all about decentralization.

Also, people should recognize that Tiktok is far more than just a short-form video app now. It's a huge eCommerce platform, live stream platform, and search engine.

The success of TikTok was to use an interest graph rather than a social graph. The article doesn’t suggest Loops would use a interest graph but does mention a volunteer moderation of content: which gives the impression it wouldn’t scale to unlimited content about unique interest categories.

Nobody is going to use this, everybody who uses the fediverse is far from someone who mindlessly consumes videos.

And this is the first time I hear about "Fediverse".
