Wikipedia agrees to share details with Delhi Court about users who made edits

Wikipedia has agreed to provide the Delhi High Court with the basic subscriber information (BSI) of users who edited the page of the news agency ANI, but will do so in a sealed cover to maintain user confidentiality. This decision comes as part of Wikipedia's appeal against a previous court order that mandated the disclosure of user identities due to alleged defamatory edits on ANI's page. Senior Advocate Akhil Sibal, representing Wikipedia, stated that notice would be served to the users without revealing their identities to the public, while the court would have access to the unredacted information. The court had previously issued a summons to Wikipedia to disclose information about three users, leading to a contempt notice when Wikipedia did not comply. The Division Bench has also ordered the removal of a page chronicling the legal disputes between ANI and Wikipedia, citing potential interference with ongoing proceedings. The defamation case filed by ANI is still pending, with the court expressing concerns about the editing capabilities of Wikipedia as a platform. The matter has been adjourned for further examination.

This is so incredibly gross. I’d rather they just pull out of India completely if this was the alternative. What are all those funds we are donating to the Wikipedia war chest for?

>While Wikipedia volunteers are primarily focused on producing content for the encyclopedia, the WMF is a major fundraising organization, bringing in $165 million from 13 million donations during the 2021–22 fiscal year

>Jim Heaphy, a 70-year-old Wikipedia editor and administrator who lives in Grass Valley, California, told me that he opposed any messaging that suggested the WMF was running out of money. “Wikipedia is under threat. But it is not under threat financially,” Heaphy said in an email. “The Wikimedia Foundation is rolling in cash.” Heaphy told me he sees the main threats to Wikipedia as coming from authoritarian regimes, ideologues, spammers, and vandals.
