Microsoft has issued a warning affecting approximately 400 million Windows PCs, as vulnerabilities previously patched have resurfaced. The advocacy group PIRG is urging Microsoft to extend support for Windows 10, which is set to end in October 2025, potentially leaving many users with obsolete systems. The group highlights that the current support extension for schools should be made available to all users to prevent a surge in discarded computers, which could have significant environmental impacts. Microsoft has introduced an extended security update (ESU) program for consumers, allowing users to pay for an additional year of support at $30. However, this option may not be widely adopted, leaving many users vulnerable to security threats. The article also discusses the risks associated with unpatched vulnerabilities, including a zero-day threat related to Windows themes. As the deadline approaches, users are encouraged to transition to Windows 11, which offers enhanced security features. Microsoft emphasizes the importance of upgrading to ensure continued protection against evolving cyber threats.

I would pay that to stay on win 10. There are no compelling reasons for win 11 or 12 right now and lots of downsides.
