Bluesky, a social media platform and competitor to X (formerly Twitter), has surpassed 20 million users, marking a significant increase attributed to users leaving X. Despite still being smaller than Instagram Threads, which boasts over 275 million monthly active users, Bluesky is rapidly closing the gap. Recent data shows that Threads had five times more daily active users than Bluesky, but this lead has narrowed to 1.5 times as of mid-November. Bluesky has also overtaken Threads in daily website visits in the U.S. and U.K., indicating growing interest. The app's usage surged by 519% in the U.S. post-election, and it became the top app on the U.S. App Store. Bluesky's growth has been remarkable since its public launch in February, doubling its user base from 9 million in September to over 20 million. The platform is gaining approximately 100,000 new users daily, with a notable spike following the announcement of reaching 15 million users. Factors contributing to this growth include dissatisfaction with X's recent changes, including its blocking feature and data policies.

Every time I've checked Bluesky it's an absolute disaster. The migration from X seems to have selected adversely for the craziest people and content.

The decentralized architecture is interesting but ultimately pointless since every uses the same app, which is where they reintroduce censorship (with very limited personal control over what is censored and moderated for you).
