Raspberry Pi 500 makes an 8GB Pi 5 into a compact, inexpensive desktop PC

The Raspberry Pi 500 has been introduced as a compact desktop PC, integrating the components of an 8GB Raspberry Pi 5 into a keyboard-shaped case priced at $90. This new model follows the Raspberry Pi 400 and features a redesigned PCB with all ports aligned at the back, including USB ports, a microSD slot, and HDMI ports. An optional Desktop Kit, which includes a mouse and power supply, is available for $120. However, the Pi 500 lacks an M.2 slot for faster storage, limiting users to microSD or USB-connected storage. Additionally, a new Raspberry Pi Monitor has been launched, a 15.6-inch 1080p screen priced at $100, designed to complement the Pi 500. The monitor requires separate HDMI input and can be powered via USB-C, but full brightness and volume require a dedicated power supply. The older Raspberry Pi 400 will see a price reduction from $70 to $60, making it a more budget-friendly option for less demanding projects. The Pi 500 offers enhanced performance and capabilities, making it a worthwhile investment for users needing more power.

So they’re basically doing what that laptop from years ago was trying to do? The one with the hand crank? Pretty wild value here.

> One of the selling points of the Raspberry Pi 5 (released in October 2023) is that it was fast enough and had enough memory to be a credible general-purpose desktop PC

Funny definition of a "general-purpose desktop PC". Does it has BIOS or UEFI ? Plus the "PC" is usually x86(-64).
