The View from My Office

The Trump administration has decided to cut $400 million in funding to Columbia University, citing the institution's alleged inaction against anti-Semitism on campus. This move raises concerns about the extent of presidential power in defunding institutions, challenging the principles of checks and balances in the U.S. constitutional system. The situation at Columbia reflects broader tensions regarding the Gaza conflict, with the administration attempting to manage campus safety amid accusations of anti-Semitic threats. Security measures have intensified, including restricted access to campus buildings and increased surveillance, ostensibly to protect individuals from anti-Semitic incidents. The atmosphere on campus has become notably quiet, with few protests occurring under strict supervision. Additionally, there are reports of plainclothes ICE officers arresting pro-Palestinian activists in the vicinity, further complicating the university's environment. The author expresses deep concern over the current political climate, likening it to the rise of fascism and criticizing the administration's alignment with authoritarian regimes. The overall sentiment is one of despair regarding the erosion of democratic norms and the implications for academic freedom and civil liberties.

Fascist attacks on academia are nothing new - previously, prospective hires had to demonstrate the correct ideological loyalty to be considered [1,2,3], and access to (tax-funded) data was given only if the research would not risk undermining that ideology [4].

The only difference is that this time, academia is attacked bluntly and openly, instead of subtly taken over and subverted.
