AP launches a sister organization seeking grants to support local, state news

The Associated Press is establishing a sister organization to raise funds supporting local and state news reporting due to the ongoing crisis in the industry. This new organization will have an independent board of directors and will seek philanthropic contributions to enhance news coverage at both the AP and other outlets. The local news sector has significantly declined over the past years, with a drastic reduction in the number of journalists working for newspapers. The AP has already received substantial grants to expand coverage in areas like climate and religion. Collaborations with nonprofit news outlets aim to strengthen the industry, particularly in government and political news coverage at the state level. Initiatives like the Knight Foundation and MacArthur Foundation's $500 million pledge highlight the urgent need to sustain independent local news sources. The AP is diversifying its revenue streams by engaging in philanthropy, marketing its news website, and seeking reader donations to ensure the availability of unbiased and fact-based news in the U.S. market.

This is heartbreaking.

The problems with local newspapers are so widespread that the venerable AP is looking for donations to keep up their reporting.

Journalism is expensive. And its being gutted.
