Toys 'R' Us Spits on Its Own Grave with AI-Generated Trash

Toys 'R' Us, once a beloved toy store, has resurfaced through a licensing deal with Macy's and is now using generative AI to create an origin story ad. The ad features an AI-animated depiction of the founder dreaming of a toy-filled future, but it has been criticized for being cringe-worthy and soul-crushing. The use of AI in the ad has raised concerns about the lack of human involvement and the attempt to evoke nostalgia artificially. Despite the attempt to portray whimsy and humanity, the ad reflects a trend of replacing human input with cost-cutting AI technology. This move is seen as part of a larger shift towards maximizing profits at the expense of genuine human experiences. The ad serves as a reminder of the changing landscape where algorithms shape consumer choices, leading to a sense of loss for the authentic and whimsical experiences of the past.

Kotaku.. I remember that name.

> Private equity-owned G/O took control of the suite of websites in 2019 following former parent Gawker’s bankruptcy.

It is very brave of them to write about zombies and graves.

I like the linked story about the guy who leaked Halo 3 early.

The guy lives a non-descript life, gets a taste of attention, and nothing comes of it. That's probably the median Internet experience.

The giraffe actually does look like Geoffrey. I don't know how they're "spitting on their own graves".

It's just not the same company. Not the same management. Probably not even a single member of the board still from the days before it was bought by private equity. That's literally how it works. They buy it for parts and basically sell off even those parts just to invest in something built from scratch, but with the same logo.

This article is difficult to read with the embedded, yet unrelated, video covering the text.

Pointless bitching and negativity with no real substance or conclusion. Throw in a few choice culture war tidbits and we’ve got a real shitter of an article. You can just tell the author loves feeling tortured and morally superior.

Hey man, I hate AI bullshit too, but did the world need this article?
