It's Time for Progressives to Recommit to Academic Freedom

Progressive students are urged to recommit to academic freedom as concerns rise over the suppression of voices on campuses. The issue was highlighted when the Harvard Law Review delayed and blocked an article by a Palestinian human rights lawyer, sparking debates among editors. The trend of justifying censorship under the guise of protecting individuals from harmful speech has been criticized. Instances of silencing pro-Palestinian activism and speech have been noted, with universities facing pressure to restrict such expressions. The shift away from embracing academic freedom has been attributed to a broader societal trend of equating speech with harm, leading to the adoption of hate speech codes and the stifling of diverse viewpoints. Calls are made for progressives to redefine academic freedom to encompass protection from all forms of pressure that hinder the pursuit of ideas, including editorial biases and employer influences. The need for a comprehensive understanding of academic freedom beyond mere legal protections is emphasized to safeguard intellectual discourse on campuses.

Meta-point: If the people within an ideological camp are willing to drop a principle to favor their own position, the penalty for abandoning aid principle should be heavy enough to make people think critically about the principle itself.

Most people nowadays are now treating political positions as if they're fashion statements, despite the wide-reaching effects said principles can have on the structures & systems that surround us.

> The same justifications we’ve used to restrict conservative speech are being used to silence us on Palestine. We need a different approach.

horseshoe theory. no one stopped to think it would impact their future because they lack conviction and choose optics over authenticity. hacker news also embodies this when it comes to anything controversial to this community.
