Read original articleA synthetic psychedelic compound and potentially toxic plant compounds have been identified in Diamond Shruumz-brand microdosing candies, leading to severe illnesses such as seizures, intubation, and ICU admissions in 39 cases across 20 states. The FDA found the synthetic psychedelic 4-AcO-DMT in the company's Dark Chocolate Bar and Birthday Cake Chocolate Bar, along with kavalactones from the Kava plant in the dark chocolate bar. While 4-AcO-DMT is a common synthetic tryptamine used in psychedelics, its safety data is limited. Kava, traditionally used for anxiety and stress, has been linked to liver toxicity in the past. The CDC lists symptoms from the linked cases as seizures, respiratory failure, hallucinations, and abnormal heart rate. The FDA advises against consuming Diamond Shruumz products and is in discussions with the company for a possible recall. Diamond Shruumz has not initiated a recall yet and has not responded to inquiries. Testing on other products is ongoing to determine the cause of the illnesses.
