Google Restricts RCS Messaging on Some Android Devices

Google has implemented restrictions on RCS messaging for some Android devices, particularly those that are rooted or have unlocked bootloaders. This move has sparked backlash among users who feel their communication capabilities are being limited. Google justifies this action as a measure to prevent spam and abuse, stating that devices must adhere to RCS standards to ensure security. Users have expressed frustration over the potential impact on their ability to send and receive messages. Despite workarounds being discovered, such as bypassing safety features, the situation remains challenging for affected users. This development reflects Google's shift towards tighter control over its ecosystem, resembling Apple's approach. The move towards more stringent security measures and control over messaging services may continue to evolve, impacting both users and Android OEMs like Samsung. Additionally, Google is introducing features like "Satellite SOS" on Pixel phones, mirroring Apple's innovations. As the smartphone landscape evolves in 2024, the competition between Android and iPhone, particularly in terms of AI capabilities, is expected to intensify, potentially influencing user preferences and brand loyalty.

> Applefication

Apple does not punish users for jailbreaking or sideloading to their devices. There is no loss of function ‘due to security reasons.’

So much for an "open protocol". It may be open on paper but if Google controls it in this way it's not open in practice.

Luckily it doesn't really matter here in Europe. Nobody uses SMS and by extension, RCS, for personal communications here. I don't have a rooted phone and I don't even have RCS enabled and I ignore all SMS (notifications blocked). And I don't use a Google account on my android phone.

I just don't want to get roped into yet another communication method. I use WhatsApp and Telegram.

I'm not really happy with those either as those are walled gardens too, and collect too much data on my phone. I'd love for something truly open like matrix to gain adoption but I doubt it'll ever happen. So I just run my own matrix server with bridges.

But clearly RCS is another protocol controlled by the vendor and as such no better than WhatsApp, iMessage and all the others.

TLDR; RCS is disabled if you root your phone.
