Microsoft China bans Android, demands staff use iPhones

Microsoft in China has mandated its staff to switch from Android to iPhones as part of a security initiative. The move, set to take effect in September 2024, requires employees to use iPhones, with Android users being provided with an iPhone 15. This decision affects both mainland China and Hong Kong, with concerns raised about the availability of the Google Play Store in mainland China. Microsoft aims to enhance security by utilizing Apple's iOS App Store for its apps like Microsoft Authenticator and Identity Pass. The company, which has a significant presence in China since 1992, employs over 6,000 engineers and scientists in its research center. This transition aligns with Microsoft's recent support for passkeys, emphasizing biometric authentication like Face ID. While neither Microsoft nor Apple have publicly commented on this directive, the move underscores Microsoft's commitment to bolstering security measures within its operations in China.

Probably a good idea in China because China blocks what appears to be all things Google. (I certainly haven't found an exception.) That means there's much more opportunity for malware to slip in via sideloading, and devices are liable to be way behind on security patches.
