Over 2,400 patients may have been exposed to HIV, hepatitis at Oregon hospitals

Over 2,400 patients in Oregon may have been exposed to infectious diseases like hepatitis B and C, as well as HIV, due to an anesthesiologist's potential failure to follow infection control practices. Providence notified around 2,200 individuals at Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center and two at Providence Portland Medical Center about the situation. Patients are advised to undergo free blood tests for screening, with Providence offering support for positive cases. The physician, previously employed by Oregon Anesthesiology Group, worked at these facilities from 2017 to 2023. Legacy Health is also reaching out to 221 potentially affected patients. The Oregon Anesthesiology Group terminated the physician upon discovering the breach in infection control practices. Investigations are ongoing, with no reported illnesses linked to the breach so far. New protocols have been implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.

In my personal experience I found the Portland healthcare system to subpar and adversarial to their patients. It was difficult to find doctors, impossible to find in-person therapists (I take on high-stress jobs and talking to others about it helps keep me focused). I’m not surprised this exposure occurred, I noticed an atmosphere of carelessness and incompetence during my entire time in Portland.

Why not?
