Read original articleAuthorities in Tijuana discovered a suspected drug-smuggling tunnel that is so long they require oxygen tanks to reach the other end. The tunnel, connected to a previous one leading into U.S. territory, prompted American authorities to investigate. Previous tunnels in the area have been extensive, with one found two years ago measuring a third of a mile long, four feet in diameter, and six stories deep. While the purpose of the latest tunnel remains unclear, it is part of a series of nearly 20 tunnels found on the California-Mexico border since 2006. Both Mexican and American officials have not confirmed if the tunnel was used for drug smuggling. In compliance with federal law, U.S. authorities will fill the tunnel with concrete upon discovery. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to uncover the full extent and purpose of this elaborate underground network.

Apropos of anything else, that's a strangely specific statute. I have seen multiple references in the media, but couldn't find it. The closest I've come is 18 USC 555 on the offenses of allowing illegal border crossing tunnels or passages (https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/555) but not on required remedies for law enforcement.
