OpenStreetMap's 20th Anniversary Celebration is August 9

OpenStreetMap is celebrating its 20th birthday, having evolved from a UK-based mapping project to the largest crowdsourced geospatial project globally. Founded by Steve Coast in 2004, OpenStreetMap democratized access to geospatial data, now supported by millions of contributors worldwide. The project's simplicity and tagging system allow for detailed mapping, with over 96 thousand keys and 155 million tags as of February 2024. Over the years, OpenStreetMap has hosted mapping parties, established the OSM Foundation, and engaged in humanitarian projects like mapping Kibera and aiding Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. Partnerships with Yahoo! and Bing for aerial imagery tracing have accelerated mapping efforts. The community organizes annual State of the Map meet-ups to discuss mapmaking and GIS research. OpenStreetMap's impact continues to grow, reaching billions of users through various applications and products using its open-source data under the Open Database License.

This has been one of the greatest community achievements that man has made in the last 20 years. Here's hoping it stays open, and empowers people and small businesses alike.

I remember going to an event in 2006 called "Mapchester" in Manchester, UK to gather data for OSM with GPS units and digital cameras. It's come an incredibly long way since then!
