Apache Software Foundation Is Retiring Its Feather Logo

The Apache Software Foundation has decided to retire its iconic feather logo, which has been a central part of its identity since 1999. This decision comes after concerns were raised by Natives in Tech and other members of the open-source community regarding the use of Indigenous imagery in the logo. The ASF aims to better represent its "community over code" ethos and promote inclusivity by evolving its corporate logo and brand system. The organization acknowledges the logo's popularity but deems it inappropriate to continue using Indigenous themes as a non-Indigenous entity. A new logo is being developed by the ASF's Marketing and publicity team in collaboration with a Branding Steering Committee to reflect the Foundation's history and global contributor base. While the logo and branding are changing, the Apache name will remain unchanged due to legal, technical, and financial complexities associated with a name change. The new logo and brand identity are expected to be unveiled at the Community Over Code NA conference in October 2024.

Makes sense. We've come a long way since a-patchy-httpd/server. Curious how the new branding will turn out.

Most people in tech will roll their eyes when they hear this, but they'll keep their mouths shut.
