Salesforce mandates October RTO for most employees as layoffs contine

Salesforce is mandating a return to the office for most employees starting in October, marking a shift from remote work during the pandemic. Certain departments will be required to come in four to five days a week, while others, like marketing and legal teams, will have a "office-flex" designation, needing to be in at least three days a week. The company will track attendance through an internal dashboard measuring badge scans and voluntary time off. This move coincides with recent layoffs at Salesforce, totaling around 300 roles, as the company faces pressure from activist investors to boost profits. Salesforce employees will return to reduced office space compared to pre-pandemic levels, reflecting a broader trend in tech firms in San Francisco downsizing their office footprints. The company's annual Dreamforce conference, a major event in San Francisco, is scheduled to take place despite concerns raised by CEO Marc Benioff about the city's issues with homelessness and drug use.

What is the real motivation for RTO? - risk averseness of management - need for control/power over employees - push some folks out without needing a layoff - management knows that RTO is better for companies despite lack of public data - external force from real estate owners/ city governments
