Sam Altman urges formation of US-led AI freedom coalition

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has called for the establishment of a US-led coalition to ensure that artificial intelligence (AI) serves as a tool for freedom and democracy rather than a means for authoritarian regimes to maintain power. In a recent op-ed, he emphasized that the control of AI is a critical issue, arguing that the US must lead in AI development to counter the significant investments made by authoritarian governments like China and Russia. Altman warned that these regimes could exploit AI for surveillance and cyber warfare, threatening democratic values. He proposed a strategy that includes enhancing AI security, developing necessary infrastructure, creating a diplomatic policy for AI, and establishing new norms for AI development and deployment. Altman envisions this coalition functioning similarly to the International Atomic Energy Agency, advocating for collaboration between US policymakers and private sector AI companies. However, his past actions raise questions about his motives, as he has previously lobbied against strict regulations for OpenAI while calling for industry oversight. Critics have pointed out inconsistencies in his approach to safety and transparency within OpenAI, suggesting a need for scrutiny regarding his influence on international AI policy. Altman's vision for a global coalition reflects a growing concern over the implications of AI technology in geopolitics and the necessity for democratic nations to unite in shaping its future.

Altman wants regulatory capture and nothing else. I wonder if he realizes that this can backfire horribly on OpenAI and the progress of AI, if the regulators go even a little bit further than he wants them to (eg with copyright.)

Be careful what you ask for, Altman.
