Elon Musk's X just sued a nonprofit advertising group out of existence

Elon Musk's social media platform, X, has successfully led to the dissolution of the Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM), a nonprofit advertising group. The lawsuit filed by X claimed that GARM conspired to boycott advertising on the platform, which GARM stated misrepresented its purpose and drained its resources. GARM, established in 2019 to help brands avoid placing ads alongside harmful content, confirmed it would defend itself in court despite shutting down. The lawsuit represents a temporary win for Musk and X CEO Linda Yaccarino, who expressed hope for broader reforms in the advertising ecosystem. However, experts warn that the lawsuit could further alienate advertisers from X, as many brands have already reduced spending due to concerns over brand safety since Musk's acquisition of the platform in late 2022. The lawsuit alleges that GARM's members collectively withheld billions in advertising due to concerns about the platform's content standards. GARM had previously reduced the incidence of ads appearing next to harmful content significantly. The dissolution of GARM raises concerns for other media watchdogs, especially as X has a history of suing organizations that criticize its content moderation practices.

I'm not a Musk follower, but it really seems he is very political after buying twitter.

Why shouldn't a group be able to boycott a site owned by someone who is using it for obvious political purposes?

"GARM is a small, not-for-profit initiative" - is the definition of it given on the World Federation of Advertisers's website. The WFA was running GARM ("WFA therefore is making the difficult decision to discontinue GARM activities"), and the WFA describes itself as "a global association that represents over 150 of the world’s biggest brands and more than 60 national advertiser associations worldwide. Together, they create a peer-to-peer network of the world's best marketers".

So what is it? A small non-profit run by an association that represents 150 of the world's biggest brands and more than 60 national advertisers associations?
