EV sales hit speed bump as drivers unplug from the electric dream
Registrations of battery electric vehicles are declining in Europe and the US, with concerns about range, charging, and costs hindering adoption, while petrol vehicles still dominate the UK market.
Read original articleRegistrations of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are declining in Europe, with a 10.8% drop in new registrations reported. The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) noted that BEVs made up 12% of the EU car market in July, down from 13.5% the previous year. Germany experienced a significant decline of 36.8%, while the UK saw a 10.5% increase in BEV registrations, overshadowed by a 28.2% rise in plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). Despite a slight increase in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), petrol-powered vehicles still dominate the UK market with a share of 54.7%. In the US, J.D. Power revised its EV sales growth forecast from 12% to 9%, predicting that EVs will account for 36% of the market by 2030. Concerns about range, charging infrastructure, and purchase costs are cited as barriers to EV adoption. Although current EV owners express high satisfaction, the number of potential buyers willing to consider an EV has decreased from 28% to 20%. The decline in UK production of electrified vehicles is attributed to model changes and supply chain issues, while overall car production fell by 14.4%. The data suggests that consumers who can afford EVs and have access to charging are making their purchases, while others are postponing the switch due to costs.

I'm no longer buying range as a primary driver keeping people away from BEVs. The way I see it, the problem you have now is people not having a garage where they can charge their cars. Without that, BEVs lose their biggest selling point: convenience. Come home, park the car in the garage, plug it in, and forget it about it. Smart charging determines when to charge, so I pay the least in power, and ensures I don't overcharge. All I have to do is plug it in and forget it. Convenient.
If you don't have a garage? It's a nightmare! There have been some brave souls who've done it, but even many of them get tired of it after a couple of years. Long story short - public charging is a shit show and highly dependent on your current location. For some people, it's great. For many people, it's not.
While plug it in and forget it works for a lot of households, it also doesn't work for a lot of households. I'm not surprised at all that BEV sales growth is starting to decline.
So is it just Germany bringing the numbers down? The article seems to want to suggest this is a bigger problem (usual EV FUD) but focussing on why Germany has such a big decline would make for a more interesting article.
